1. Overview
The South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) is a major strategic infrastructure aimed at alleviating severe water shortages in Northern China, optimizing the allocation of water resources, and improving the ecological environment. The SNWDP is the largest and longest water diversion project in the world, and benefits the greatest number of people and regions. The SNWDP comprises three water diversion routes in the Eastern, Central, and Western China, diverting water from the lower, middle, and upper reaches of the Yangtze River, respectively (Fig. 1). It also connects four major rivers—the Yangtze River, Huai River, Yellow River, and Hai River. Thus, the SNWDP establishes a pattern of water resources allocation in China that regulates three south-north water routes and connects four west-east rivers.
