7. Conclusion
In this paper, we examined how the roles of EMS workers have changed over time, and explored the views of EMS workers on their personal health and safety at work. To determine whether there was a perceived issue among EMS workers, a mixed methods multiphase study was conducted. Special attention was given to the work environment, tasks, and equipment used to determine the factors that had the most significant effect on performance. Workers' ideas and experiences regarding job safety, efficiency, and workplace design were also reported. TLX data, observations, and interviews indicate that there are several areas for improvement in terms of design. More importantly, a systems approach should be taken to avoid the precedent of piecemealed, tacked on solutions that do not work well together. Eliminating redundancy or ill-cooperating equipment has the potential to save time and reduce temporal demand, and has great potential to ease the mental burden on EMS workers.
