Three-phase hollow fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HF-LPME) and parallel artificial liquid membrane extraction (PALME) are both microextraction methods based on supported liquid membranes (SLMs). In a three-phase SLM system, analytes of interest are extracted from an aqueous sample, through an organic solvent and further into an aqueous acceptor receiver solution. This system offers a simple, selective and cheap alternative to existing sample preparation techniques, and because of minor use of organic solvents per sample, these techniques are considered as green extraction techniques. This review will focus on the similarities and differences of the two techniques, discussing advantages and disadvantages, and show some examples from the last years on how the techniques can be used in different ways for preparation of different matrices.
